ADULTS.'s "OLD !" [Review]

It’s been a long time since I last reviewed a single. In fact, it’s almost been 5 years. However, this single is a bit of a special one.

Back in August 2023, I got a message from one of the producers of Prince Daddy & The Hyena’s “Adult Summers” saying that he was a fan of the blog and wanted me to just take a listen to his band’s music. A couple of days later, I was at the band’s concert here in New York. A few weeks after that, I was at a Jeff Rosenstock concert with him.

Originally called 21st Century Spectacular, the project now known as “ADULTS.”, headed by Drew Tirella is a punk rock outfit from New York. While the lineup has shifted from what it once was back in the day, ADULTS. now consists of four members, Drew (vocals, guitar, lyricist, and producer), Sean (vocals and guitar), Jackson (vocals and bass), and Casey (percussion).

On November 16th, ADULTS. released “OLD !”.

I personally believe that the punk genre is the purest form of music. The pure cathartic release of energy in this track is the only way such feelings can be expressed.

The track clocks in at just under 3 minutes. It’s a song about what life is like in your late 20s and early 30s. Every now and then, you come to terms with your mortality and wonder what on earth you’re doing with your life and this song exemplifies that perfectly.

Can't be young and dumb forever

From graduating college to joining the real world, ADULTS. is all about capturing the big thoughts and the little ones. "OLD !" exemplifies that perfectly. The amazing intro/outro guitar riffs will get stuck in your head as you ponder your existence. Drew and Sean have mastered the gruff almost metal-like vocals as they scream into their microphones. It's pure punk.

The song discusses what it really is like once you become an 'adult'. Sobering up from that party persona that you maintained during your early/mid-20s and realizing that where you're at kinda sucks. A run-down apartment, struggling financially, and your body falling apart. Age comes with a price and that price sucks. Still, despite the struggles the world throws at you every second of every day, you gotta push through.

Final Thoughts

Getting older sucks, plain and simple. It's something everyone deals with, but the way that ADULTS. is able to perfectly exemplify a truly sobering experience is nothing short of amazing.
